Our 18th annual Turtle Derby took place on April 25. We had an amazing turnout of local friends and a busload of visiting Little Sisters and Residents from the Homes in Evansville and St. Louis.
The Auxiliary had one hallway filled with items from “Grandma’s Attic”. The area was continuously crowded with interested shoppers who were excited to find keepsakes for bargain prices AND for a good cause. Those who were more interested in jewelry shopped at another booth of “Little Treasures.”
Volunteers worked every booth and every room and even sold tickets for and served the chicken dinners. More dinners were sold than ever before –and many compliments were paid to the cooks.
The hallways were filled with raffles and booths—and in one area, several bands took turns playing while excited Residents and friends danced with loved ones. It was a real party atmosphere!
The auditorium was the hub of activity. This is where the Turtle Derby itself took place. The room was packed with Turtle sponsors, owners, trainers and finally, the innumerable fans that had placed bets on and were cheering for the turtles. One crowd of young boys all had matching shirts which stated, “Fear the Turtle!”
Fun was had by all who attended (a record crowd). The day ended with the announcement of the winner of our grand sweepstakes—a trip to Nassau! All were thrilled when the winner was announced as our very own Coordinator of the AJJ—Mrs. Mary Bowles!!!!
Turtle Derby Terrific!
