“Our State Fair is a Great State Fair!”
A summer tradition at St. Joseph’s Home is to have our own State Fair. This event is a dozen or so years old and originated because attending the Kentucky State Fair in mid-August was frankly just too hot. Each year the auditorium would be transformed into the Midway with fair food, games, contests, entertainment and farm animals. Bingo was added to the week-long event because Bingo is just always a good idea! The event is a summer favorite for Residents, volunteers, families, staff and of course the Little Sisters.
So, fast-forward to Summer 2020 in the midst of a pandemic, now what do you do? Volunteers, families and of course live stock are not allowed in the building.
Our State Fair 2020 was a bit different but thanks to the hard work of our staff it was a great State Fair. Turner Circus performers, Mini’s from Heaven, (miniature horses) and the Harmonics performed for the Residents, just not inside the building. Our own Activity Director, Maria, asked her sons to share their little lamb, who they affectionately named Jesus, with the Residents. The action was just a window away, as the performers made their way around the building using the fire lane.
Everyone enjoyed the Fair and is looking forward to next year when we can all be together again!
