Turtle Magic

  • May 10, 2013

The fried chicken was delicious. The baked goods and candy are gone. The Little Treasures shop and Grandma’s Attic are now empty and the turtles are on a year long vacation. Turtle Derby 2013 is now a part of Little Sisters history.

I have told you about our wonderful volunteers that come together to make the Turtle Derby an amazing event, shared with you the organizational skills of their illustrious leader Mary Ann and given you the rundown of fun, food and excitement that the Turtle Derby holds. However, this story would not be complete without telling you about “turtle magic!”

Turtle magic comes in many forms behind the scenes of the Turtle Derby, from setting up, tearing down, building, sweeping, mopping, and cooking, not to mention feeding the turtles and changing the water in their tanks. These “behind the scenes folks” provide the “turtle muscle” needed to move all of the furniture out to make room for the tables and chairs. They use a little “turtle engineering” to construct the track and booths. They provide expert “turtle design” to creatively place all of the Tiny Treasures and items in Grandma’s Attic. There are those in “turtle prep” who do everything from dipping endless cups of cole slaw to frying mountains chicken. And we can’t forget those in “turtle environment” who keep the floors clean, the bathrooms stocked and trash out of sight. All of this “turtle magic” is seamless and goes on without disruption to the care and meeting the day to day needs of the Residents of St. Joseph’s Home.

With a grateful heart, the Little Sisters would like to thank all those who sponsored, volunteered, and provided a little “turtle magic!” Your generosity allows the Little Sister’s to continue their Mission of caring and providing for the needs of the poor elderly in our community.

This is it, for Mortimer Sneed your roving reporter, until Turtle Time 2014!
